What is Illuminated Pathways Family Therapy?

Who will be helping me?

From getting registered to booking your weekly appointments and making payments, we have our wonderful Lydia Permenter in the front office to assist you. As for our therapy team; we have several licensed mental health professionals on staff, both associate license holders and fully licensed counselors, as well as graduate level clinicians. 

 

Who are the therapists?

Therapists are specialized in specific areas, ie., couples, individuals, children, teens, groups.  Each therapist will provide and facilitate tools and techniques for each session to provide the most optimal outcomes that are desired for the client.  

 

Are the therapist’s verified?

Therapists are licensed individuals within Texas (and other states).  An exam must be passed in order to become licensed after receiving a master’s degree in mental health/counseling.  Once graduate school is completed and passed the State Board exam (NCE), then the filing for licensure will ensue.

 

How much does it cost?

We accept private pay at various different rates depending on the counselor licensure status and experience. In addition, we also accept many different insurances as well as EAPs. Insurance copays will vary based on the company you have. Your insurance provider will be able to inform you of your copay.

 

Is the therapy face to face?

All therapy sessions are expected to be held face to face. Therapy is best conducted and most productive in person.

 

Is the therapy virtual?

Virtual sessions are rare, but may be held if needed on a case by case basis as determined by the counselor and the client. 

How would I communicate with my counselor? 

Most communications will be done in person; however, it can be done via in client portal, email, and by phone.  There are times the communication will be done virtually. 

 

How do I pay for therapy?

Therapy sessions are paid through various options: ie., credit card or cash.

 

Will my information be held confidential?

All information is confidential unless a mandated report must be made due to disclosure of sensitive information such as, sexual abuse/physical abuse, intent for suicidal/homicidal ideation. For minors, parents have the right to gain confidential information, as long as there is no potential of harm by releasing the information for the minor client – “Counselor & Patient Privilege.”

How do I know if I need therapy?

You may consider therapy if you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious or just not like yourself. It can also help if you notice changes in sleep, mood, motivation, or relationships. You don’t have to wait until things become overwhelming, therapy can be helpful for anyone who wants support, clarity, or personal growth. 

 

What is a good age to start therapy?

Illuminated Pathways Family Therapy serves clients as young as 4 years old, so any age 4 and up is an appropriate age to start therapy. Therapy will be tailored to fit the age of the client, for example, play therapy is utilized with young children.

 

What if I don’t like my therapist?

It’s completely normal if you do not feel a connection with your therapist. Building trust and comfort can take time, but if it doesn’t feel like the right fit, you can always request to work with someone else. The goal is to make sure you feel supported and safe during sessions.

 

Is it normal to cry in therapy?

It is normal for people to cry in therapy, but this varies case by case. People typically discuss and work through different seasons of their lives in therapy, so it is a space people feel safe enough to grieve, release, and express their emotions. 

 

How do I know if therapy is working for me or not?

Feeling more self-aware, managing emotions better and responding to challenges differently are signs that therapy is working. Growth can be slow, but consistent small changes, like clearer thinking, better communication, or feeling more hopeful are all signs of progress. 

 

What are the benefits of therapy?

Therapy helps individuals gain insight into themselves, build coping skills, and process emotions in a healthy way. It allows for a safe space to unpack life’s challenges, improve communication, and create lasting change in mental and emotional well-being. 

 

If I overthink, should I come to therapy?

Yes. Overthinking often signals that your mind is overloaded or anxious. Therapy can help you identify what is driving those thoughts, challenge negative patterns, and learn ways to calm your mind so you can think more clearly.

How many locations do you have?

We currently serve clients from our primary location at 18303 Blanchmont St, Houston, TX 77058, and we’re excited to share that we’re growing. As our practice expands, we’re actively exploring opportunities to serve families beyond our current location—both in-person and through innovative, accessible care options.
